stay at home dad with 3 kids, living in the "thriving metropolis" of fürstenwalde,germany. i impart my expertise on raising three kids in a foreign land whilst simultaneously discussing kittens - because i can. friday, 1 april 2016 settling in to german life - the review dear interested peoples, i played quite a good off-the-cuff april fools day trick on friday, despite the kids being on guard. whilst checking my emails, i stated "oh my gosh, you kids need to go into school tomorrow (saturday), because the headmistress wrote an email saying inspectors are coming in. each child has to do a speech on what they like about the school!" teo ran from the room crying "no, i'm not going to do a speech!!". emi asked if she could call her friend to discuss this immediately. lottie continued to pick her nose. it was a roaring success! anyway, that isn't the topic of today's blog. the topic is the review on how well the family are settling into german life. it's currently the easter holidays, and i have now taught the kids how to play texas hold 'em poker, blackjack, bullshit/cheat (you can guess which word teo likes to call it), and patience. teaching these games has meant the holidays have gone extremely well, with no one stating those dreaded words "i'm bored". i've also made a bit of money - teo isn't very good at texas hold 'em. life skills. i've taught the kids life skills. colouring easter eggs with tante bärbel so lets go to the review boards. (sorry my html is out of whack) lottie's review (3) score (out of 10) moved from "i like not kindergarten." "i like not the teachers." "i like not the kinders" to "i found another stick", "i can do anything" and "bye daddy" still misses amber, filippa, and mila, but now has 2 friends lotta and mila. summary : surprised at how long it has taken - i thought she would be the first to settle. has a great collection of sticks and stones. her " denglish " is pretty cool. 7.37 a selection of sticks and stones from the lottie collection teo's review (8) score (out of 10) moved from "i hope i have a friend to invite to my birthday" to "why do you ask how my day was daddy? the answer is always great. today was great, and tomorrow will be great too." teo has lots of friends. according to emi's buddy, all the girls in his class like him. his teacher described him as "charming". but they haven't seen him when he loses texas hold 'em poker. summary : he is quite settled. but he definitely misses his school and friends back in nz. 9.1 "look opa, no hands!" fun times at the rüdelbahn emi's review (11) score (out of 10) "i used to love the week and going to school, and i didn't like the weekends. now its the other way around" emi has found a good friend here, thank goodness. otherwise she might have become an unbearable almost teenager. summary : emi wants to go back to nz pretty soon - well, right now, actually. i might have to buy her a pony and put it in the attic. we did get her a hamster, so that pumped up the score. she named it " hatschi "the german sound for sneeze (pronounced 'ha-chee') which is quite funny. i keep saying "bless you" when she says his name. 4.89 an emi "selfie". needs work. what hatschi does all day - hangs around nibbling the bars. a happy day! on the rüdelbahn elke's review (wife - age unknown but under 40) score (out of 10) "it's just like riding a bike, i haven't forgotten anything" (referring to her job as a flight attendant). "it's nice having time away from the family" elke is loving working back with lufthansa. she flies all over europe. most of her stints are for 5 days. summary : this is one of the many reasons we are back here, so that elke could continue working with lufthansa. i think she is quite content. 9.03 i made this next one more detailed, because i know more about how this person feels about the whole germany move: grant's review (husband, 42) score (out of 10) - "oh lottie, you're so cute and adorable" "no i'm not". - "teo, cleaning your room also means the star wars, playmobil, lego, hot wheels, clothes, marbles, books and drawing pad". "but i'm playing with them" "all of them?" "yes." - "i'm bored, daddy" "ok emi. do the dishes, mop the floor, put the laundry away". "no, no. not that kind of bored". - "who is the most handsome, intelligent and witty daddy in the world?" "uncle david!!" "what the deuce?" some key points: - i'm annoyed that the german sales people are all friendly in fürstenwalde. even the checkout lady in aldi is lovely. she makes jokes! (usually at my expense). i came to germany for the "dienstleistungswüste". luckily i get a regular berlin fix so i can hear customers being called "ignorant" by sales people in saturn , and i call vodafone hotline for some fantastic indifference. - fürstenwalde isn't so bad for a former east german town. it's actually quite nice, as are the surrounds. i have managed to keep up my running throughout winter, much to the delight of the local populace (short shorts), and discovered some cool tracks, especially along the spree . but of course wellington beats it hands down for events, pubs, running tracks and everything :) - the school and kindy are really cool. it's montesorri, its in a little village ( hangelsberg ) in the woods, the teachers are great. the parents are all lovely, and have their kids there because of the philosophy. students go there from all over the region, including berlin. - we have 2 apartments below us: one has a smoker that shares his habit with us. the other has a lady that gets tourrettes syndrome at weird hours of the night. aside from these annoyances, the apartment itself is quite nice. - things are not so cheap, our spending habits have stayed the same, but our income has changed! our straits are definitely not dire by any stretch of the imagination, and i am very grateful for how lucky we are, but we do need to look into some of our "alternative options". by golly, i might have to get a job! - i want to do a german course, but the next one at my level is end of may. if i do not get a job, hopefully i will get a place on this one, but obviously there is large demand right now! - going from a kiwi winter to a german winter was a stupid idea. it's rather depressing. summary : the settling in process has been ok for me, and the change has been really good in that it has challenged me a lot and put me in uncomfortable situations. looking forward to the next 6 months - bring on the european summer!! 6.6 thats all for now. till next time! posted by grant humm at 16:06 no comments: email this blogthis! share to twitter share to facebook share to pinterest wednesday, 17 february 2016 german winter, and a trip to france dear interested peoples, well, for a european winter, it's been pretty mild and windy - kind of like wellington in november. you know that when a blog starts with a weather update, the author is probably not quite as inspired as usual, so i've basically fill the blog with pictures :) igloo building time aside from the poopy days where your fingers freeze to the steering wheel, and the snot dripping from your nose turns into an icicle... there are lovely days like this, where the snow is just perfect for building an igloo: family digging in. the kids spent 5 minutes helping - and the adults worked on it the next 4 hours. complete with doorframe, door, and castle ramparts... and a window built of ice! the next day... france the kids and i flew standby to frankfurt, where we met elke and then continued onwards to tolouse to check out the aude department for a long weekend, taking the kids out of school with the excuse that they would "continue to learn more about the french language and culture". flying standby is always a bit risky - we got the last seats to frankfurt, and each child had a different seat spread out through the plane. i did manage to swap seats to sit next to lottie, though i was sorely tempted not to... there we had the delightful hosts, florence and kids, who had come over from nz f
